Abstract

Nowadays, children are facilitated with well-developed education, healthy food, and technologies. Thus, they have been protected with provision decided by the government. In contrast to the fact seen, children in the past, especially in the industrialism era are no treated well. They suffer hard life as the children. With the condition, Charles Dickens writes Oliver Twist reflected how children’s condition was in Industrial Revolution. Through the short description given, this study aims to prove whether Oliver Twist really reflects children condition in Industrialism era. The objectives of the study are to find out the children condition in industrial revolution and how Oliver Twist reflects the children condition in industrial revolution. The limitation of the problem in this study is to analyze the literary form of Oliver Twist. There are five theories used in the study which are the importance of early childhood education, the importance of play, the parenting style, early childhood development and mimetic approach. The importance of early childhood education explains the reason of childhood education and the influence of child’s learning experience. The importance of play explains about the kinds of play and its functions. The parenting style theory is about how the children should be treated. Early childhood development tells about the development of children in several aspects. The mimetic approach is the approach which sees the literary work as the imitation of universe. The data in this study is gathered through reading process done by the researcher. The technique used to analyze the data is and mimetic approach. With mimetic approach, the similarities between children condition in the novel and in the history can be seen. The data is presented through the verbal information of the novel which is classified through the categories which are nutrition, physic, psychology, friendship, and education, and there are the tables which show the children condition both literally and historically. The results of this study are that the children conditions are harmed through the categories which have been mentioned. Besides that, it has been proved that Oliver Twist reflects the children condition in industrialism era. The similarities are found and presented in the tables. The conclusions of the study are the children condition in industrial revolution is found to be dreadful and poor both nutritionally, physically, psychologically, affably, and educationally, and Oliver Twist reflects the children condition in industrialism era. The suggestions for the further research are the adults should not ill-use the children, the adults must protect the children’s right; promote the action for not ill-treating the children. For the readers who want to analyze Oliver Twist, it is suggested to analyze the novel from different perspective such as anthropology or psychology.
