Abstract

People use language to communicate with one another thus language has become an important part of society among human. By language, people can express their ideas and feelings. Language as the mediator of communication can be transferred both spoken and written. Song as one of spoken discourse type also can be used to communicate with people as they can also learn language through it. Griffee (1992) stated that songs reflect the feelings happen at that time. The emotions and feelings which contained in the songs can have various interpretations of the meaning. The speech act theory which developed by John Austin (1962) can determine the interpretation of the speaker’s intention in performing particular speech act.The purpose of this study is to find out what types of illocutionary acts are found in the lyrics of the song. This study is qualitative since it does not deal with numbers and happens in a natural setting. The writer did the analysis of illocutionary types which found in the lyrics of 3 songs of the album entitled “#3”. The writer chose the theory of Speech Act by John Austin (1962) as the fundamental theory. The writer collected the lyrics of the songs from the internet and analyzed the data by classifying the verb phrase of the lyrics using the classification of Illocutionary Acts and Verbs by Geoffrey Leech (1983) as the parameter. The result of this study shows that there are only 4 out of 6 types of illocutionary acts that can be found in the lyrics of the 3 songs which are representative, commissive, directive and expressive. The rogative and declaration function do not appear in those 3 songs. Thus, in conclusion, the writer believes that song has language function in its lyrics.
