Abstract

Sari Livia Asia.2012. The Techniques Used by the English Teachers in Teaching Vocabulary to the Elementary School Students in the private English Course in Surabaya. S- 1 thesis, The Faculty of Teacher Training. The English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University. 2012. English is offered in Elementary school ; moreover, we are living in the global era now with the flow information which mostly in English. As in other language, English has four skills. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This study mainly focuses on the question what are the techniques used in teaching vocabulary to the elementary school students in the selected English course. It is to find out the techniques used by the English teachers in Teaching Vocabulary to the Elementary School Students in the private English Course. In this study, the writer uses the descriptive survey. The subjects in this study are teacher A and teacher B. In analyzing the data, the writer collects the data by using observation checklist, observation sheet, and video recording to know the techniques used by the English teachers in teaching vocabulary to the Elementary School Students. As a result, the writer finds eighteen techniques being adjusted by the English teachers in teaching vocabulary to the Elementary School students. They are translation, spelling games, ordering, guessing games, stick it, question and answer, simon says, coloring, real object, matching, jumble sentence, missing picture, flashcard, categories, memorization, dictation, drawing, and crossword. The writer suggests that the English teachers must be able to mix and match the techniques used in teaching vocabulary to the Elementary school students. In order to create the situation of the class fun, the teacher should use games such as back to the board games, what’s missing, bingo, puzzle, and concentration card. Besides collecting a lot of data during the observation, the writer should do the observation more than five times to get more information about the techniques being applied by the English teachers in teaching vocabulary. In order to avoid the problem that may happen while doing the fourth chapter. Then, the writer wishes that her thesis may help the other researchers in enlightening their concept dealing with the teaching techniques for improving the student’s vocabulary.
