Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the important components in a language. The more knowledge of vocabulary acquired by the students, the easier and faster the students can communicate with others. Unfortunately, the school where the researcher conducted her research, she found out that students did not have good English skills due to their limited vocabulary and supporting facilities. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find out the effect of using picture media on the vocabulary achievement of third graders of xxx elementary school. The procedure of the research was conducted within 6 meetings: 1 meeting for pre-test, 4 meeting for treatments and 1 meeting for post-test. This study is a quantitative research with pre-experimental design using pre-test and post-test to see the improvement score of students’ vocabulary achievement. The study was conducted in one of private school in Surabaya. The subjects of the study was a group consisting of one class of 3rd grade students of elementary school from Surabaya in the academic year of 2017/2018. There were 30 students who joined this research. The group was taught by using picture media. The instrument that was used in this research is vocabulary test. The data is analyzed using T-test. The results of the data analysis is as follows. First, the mean score of the post-test (76.43) is higher than the pre-test (56.13). Second, there is a significant difference in the vocabulary achievement in that group by the T-test results. With the level of significance at 5%, the t-observation (to) was 10,65 and the t-table was 2,04. The to (10,65) is greater than tt (2,04). Therefore, the hypothesis of this research “There is a significant difference between the students’ vocabulary achievement before and after being taught using picture media” is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that picture media applied in teaching vocabulary is effective for improving the students’ vocabulary achievement. Finally, the researcher suggests that further researchers could use other media to find out whether more media can be used in improving students’ vocabulary achievement. And for the vocabulary used, researcher recommends using vocabulary related to adjectives, verbs or adverbs.
