Abstract

In teaching the English structure to Indonesian SMA students, the teacher can not avoid facing many problems that occur during the teaching learning process. It has been proved that most of the students still do not understand the English structure well. During the teaching learning activities, the teacher usually states the rule, explains the grammatical item, and then asks the students to do the exercises. When the teacher gives them test, most of the students can not give the correct answers. To overcome the problem, the teacher should improve his technique of teaching to achieve the goal of teaching the English structure. This evidence encourages the writer to present a technique of teaching structure through reading passages. In this thesis, the writer discusses the function of reading passages in the teaching of structure, and the steps of teaching structure through reading passages at the SMA. Hopefully, these ideas will be of some help for the English teachers to improve their techniques of teaching structure which in turn will help their students obtain better understanding about the English structure. Through reading passages, the teacher facilitates the students to understand the grammatical item to be taught. Through meaningful contexts, the students will also easily remember the sentence patterns of the grammatical item. The techniques of teaching used in this thesis refer to the techniques given by Edward David and Rebecca. The two techniques of teaching structure used here are : the deductive and inductive techniques. The use of reading passages in teaching structure refers to B. Libbish's technique of teaching. It is essential to provide reading passages in teaching the English structure. The success of teaching structure depends on the way the teacher presents reading passage which is in accordance with the grammatical item to be taught. Finally, since this thesis is not the result of a field study, the writer hopes that a kind of experimental study will be done to prove the effectiveness of teaching structure through reading passages technique by other S1 graduate candidate of the English Department who are interested in writing the same topic.
