Abstract

Reading short stories can help people lessen their stress and eventually lead them to imaginative world to actually find a way out of a problem. That makes reading can be helpful in helping people figuring out when they encounter obstacles in fulfilling their needs. From that, the writer wants to learn and find about the self-actualization and obstacles faces by the main characters of Fitzgerald’s short stories. The scope and limitation of the study is focusing on four short stories, they are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Jelly Bean, The Camel’s Back, and The Diamond as Big as the Ritz that are compiled in one book entitled The Tales of Jazz Age. The writer uses Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory and Abrams’ objective approach in analysing the stories. The result of the analysis is all of the main characters have qualified the characteristics of self-actualized people. It makes them to have reached the self-actualization stage even though they do not meet all the characteristics, but according to Maslow (1970), they are still considered to be self-actualized even if they qualified only to one characteristic since all people go through different experiences. The obstacles that they faced may halt their way, but they can still find a way to overcome it. By the end of the study, the writer hopes this study to be a reference for further study on related topic.
