Abstract

Second language acquisition (SLA) consists of 'the acquired system' and 'the learning system' which are different because acquisition is a subconscious process while learning refers to the conscious knowledge. Language acquirer could learn English anytime from the exposures they got like watching TV, playing games, listening to music, etc. This research involved 102 students of 11 graders in the questionnaire filling which related to activities they might expose to outside the classroom and 78 students returned the questionnaire. This research also involved narrative inquiry method which began with queries into the outside classroom English exposures of 4 students, Bernard, Neil, Andrea, and Emilio (all are pseudonyms), which influenced their English proficiency. Narrative Inquiry is a method in which stories are used as both method and research result presentation. The finding showed that listening to music and playing games were popular exposures that the students do often which help them improve their English proficiency subconsciously in a way they enjoyed by singing along with the music and searched for difficult words from the games they played. So, it was best for the teachers and parents to not worry about the trivial matters such as studying has to be in a formal way, because the exposures they have also considered as a stress-free learning situation which help them in their learning process.
