Abstract

Literature can be said as fictional imagination because sometimes literature is not the same as events that occur in real life. However, literature is a reflection of life that contains the value of life. Hence, the writer wants to show the readers about the contents of holocaust events and the Second World War that shed light the story of Anne Frank. Since this study is a historical approach, the writer compared the historical facts which contained in historical books with the events in the book and for the final step, the writer interprets the findings in order to make the readers easier to comprehend the events. As results, the writer found that the hardness of persecution of Jewish people in Anne Frank’s book The Diary of A young Girl revealed through the historical settings which contains the political, economical and sociocultural aspects in two different places and two different times. Besides, the study found out Anne’s characterization when facing the horrible situation such as tough, optimist, patient, and brave also revealed the circumstances in the novel. Finally, the historical facts shape the plot of the novel such as expositions which marked by the introduction of the circumstances and few information about Frank family, conflict which marked by Margot got call-up and the first deportation. The conflict contains wide arrays of raising actions culminated by a climax marked by the D-day and the last is denouement marked by the betrayal in Nazi and the development of Anne’s character. In the future, the writer hopes that other researchers in Indonesia can do more research on applying this historical approach to shed light the settings of English literature work.
