Abstract

Despite its fictionality, literaturre may reflect the reality of life so that readers may learn values from a main character Millie Dilmount of Thoroughly Modern Millie how she cope the challenge of modern life . Accordingly, the writer wants to show the readers about the contents of Millie Dillmount copes with the challenge of modern life. Since the study is a drama musical approach, the writer reread the book of drama musical of Thoroughly Modern Millie, The writer find out how Millie Dillmount cope with the challenges of modern life and make the readers easier to comprehend the events. The results of the data analysis show Millie, the main character of the musical drama, has to cope with the modernism in New York City compared to her origin from a village in Kansas. There are at least three major characteristics of modern life that she has to cope with: breaking of the tradition, an appreciation of hard work and money, and determination to improve one’s social and economic status. In the sense of breaking off the tradition, Millie ignores the tradition she used to comply with. She copes with with it by breaking off the tradition with leaving familial ties, holding new relationship values and wearing new fashion. Dealing with the second characteristics of the appreciation of hard work and money with hard work and money for survive on her life. She changes her mindset to be hard working than other individuals. She leaves her comfort zone to get better life by changing her mindset. She also becomes smarter to get money to survive on life by exploiting any situations for her benefits.The last but not the least is the third characteristics of determination to improve one’s social and economic status by getting a good job and marrying a rich guy. However, the lesson learned from the drama is the fact that there is no guarantee when a person moves to town, he or she will get rich more easily. Another fact is that there is no guarantee happiness can be brought up by marrying a rich guy. This study found that marrying a rich guy will only bring assurance and they will feel guaranteed in their social status, a glorious future, and luxury life. Millie’s determination to fight that norm is the best value she offers via this drama.
