Abstract

Nowadays, Learning Management System (LMS) as a web -based technology for holding an e-learning environment has a big role for students in teaching learning activities because they also have other activities to be done besides learning and studying. In fact, everything brings advantages and disadvantages for those who have ever used it or have been using it until now. Therefore, this study is aimed at finding out the students’ perceptions on the use of LMS at the English Department. This study is a descriptive qualitative case study using survey design. The study used an online questionnaire created using Google Form and it was shared to the respondents on May 20th 2019 to June 15th 2019. The respondents for this research were 40 English Department students from academic year 2015/2016; 2016/2017; 2017/2018, and 2018/2019 in Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. The result of this study shows the perceptions of the English Department students from 4 batches (2015/2016; 2016/2017; 2017/2018; 2018/2019). The result of this study found that the English Department students had positive perceptions on the use of LMS since they felt that LMS could bring more advantages than disadvantages to them. Three suggestions are provided by this study. First is for the lecturers in English Department to start to use LMS as the media to teach not only in particular subject, but also in most of the subjects in English Department. Second is for the teachers in general to start to use LMS in other subjects, not only English. The last is for the future researcher to make another research related to LMS with different factor like the effectiveness of LMS and with different point of view, such as from the lecturers’ and/or teachers’ point of view.
