Abstract

Translating simile can be quite challenging due to several factors, so in order to make it easier, translation strategies are needed. To learn more about simile translation strategies, this study is done. This study is a descriptive study aimed to find out what simile translation strategies are used to translate the similes in James Dashner’s the Maze Runner and what are the qualities of the simile translations in James Dashner’s the Maze Runner The study was done by listing all the similes in the novel and their translation. Then, each simile is analyzed to find out which translation strategy is used to translate it. After that, the data was presented in a chart. The theory used to analyze the simile is Pierini’s (2007) theory on simile translation strategies. The translation strategies include retention of the vehicle, replacement of the vehicle with another vehicle, reduction of the simile if it is idiomatic, retention of the same vehicle plus explicitation of similarity feature, replacement of the vehicle with a gloss, and omission of the simile. The result shows that there are 243 similes found in the novel. Out of all the similes, 181 are translated using the first strategy, retention of the same vehicle. It is the strategy that is used the most. Although there are 6 strategies, only 4 of them are used to translate the similes in the novel.
