Abstract

Online learning media is needed and it is worldwide in this current era. Video blog, one of the most interesting learning mediums is worldwide and it is familiar for students and the general public. A video blog is a learning media that can help and guide the students to improve their speaking skills. Video blog is an interesting learning medium because it is very effective and has a positive impact on the students’ speaking improvement. At the English Department, Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya, one of the most developed learning media now is a video blog. Therefore, the researcher carried out this study to explore the students’ perception of the benefits and challenges of using video blogs to practice speaking. The total for all participants were 37 students, consisted of 35 students of batch 2018 from the English Department, and 2 students of batch 2017 from the Physics Department who joined speaking A class of the academic year 2018/ 2019. The data were collected through questionnaires. The findings showed the advantages of using a video blogs to practice speaking and the challenges of using a video blog to practice speaking. The results showed positive perceptions regarding the use of video blog to practice speaking. On the other side, the writer found some challenges regarding with the students’ perceptions in this study. Based on the result, the writer found that the students felt difficult to follow certain cultural situations during creating video blogs. Next, the writer found that the students felt difficult to use proper expression or words. Therefore, to improve the use of video blogs, the application of video blogs as a learning medium needs to be continued by the lecturers in the future and some matters need to be improved to develop the learning quality.
