Abstract

Value is a concept that describes the belief of an individual or culture. Most people watching movies without knowing the importance of the value. Self-reliance is a part of moral values which is very useful and important for people’s life. Therefore, this thesis is intended to find out how self-reliance is represented verbally and non-verbally depicted in “The Pursuit of Happyness” movie script using Linda & Eyre book published in 1997 and Emerson Essay published in 1841. This thesis was also conducted with descriptive-qualitative design as the analysis was based on the script of the movie. This thesis shows that all verbal and non-verbal representation of self-reliance was depicted in the movie. The researcher found out that in verbal representation, the self-reliance shown through the main character of the movie, Chris Gardner by accepting responsibility, doing the best in the world, by failing to develop the gift and talents that can serve or enlighten or even benefit other people, by pursuing one’s own thought and intuitions, rather than adhering to public norms, by developing self-acceptance which involves acquiring self-knowledge and practicing self-compassion. Beside that, in non-verbal representation, the self-reliance shown by gestures of the main character in fixing the light bulb consciousnessly. The writer also suggests future researchers to use other important types of values, which are love, care, loyalty, honesty, bravery or courage, respect, kindness and friendliness, justice and mercy.
