Abstract

Conditional Sentence is one of the grammatical items to be mastered by the fourth semester of senior high school students. However, in the writer’s experience on the teaching practice program at Santa Agnes Catholic Senior High School Surabaya, the fact shows that many students still have difficulties in mastering the Conditional Sentences. This situation leads the writer to conduct a study on analyzing the students’ errors in using the Conditional Sentences. In conducting this study, the writer gave the test to the Second Year Students of Santo Stanislaus Catholic Senior High School Surabaya. The first test – the try-out test – was administered in class II A 1, and the second test – the real test – was administered in class II A2 and class II A3. From the students’ test papers, the writer got the data needed. Then, the errors the students made were noted down, classified according to their types, and put in a rank order. The errors that the students made can be classified into over-generalization, ignorance of rule restrictions, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesized. The findings of the study how that the Second Year students of Santo Stanislaus Catholic Senior High School Surabaya do make errors in using Conditional Sentences, and the errors are ranked from the highest to the lowest one; over-generalization (= 39.23%), incomplete application of rules (= 33.10%), ignorance of rule restrictions (= 27.01%), and false concepts hypothesized (= 0.66%). At last, the writer hopes that the findings of this study could give better information about how the students learn the Conditional Sentences, so that teachers can improve their techniques in teaching Conditional Sentences.
