Abstract

Structure, one of the language components, of a language is very important. To be able to understand English, people should learn the English sentence structure. The mastering of the English sentence structure is impossible without knowing the structure of English sentence in which the adverbial clause is an essential part. Adverbial clause is widely used and it occupies major parts of writing. So it is important to know and to understand it properly. Adverbial clause is stated as a compulsory grammatical item that should be taught and learned by the SMA students (see GBPP, 1984:49). Assuming that the SMA students are already at the middle level, they should have already known something about the adverbial clause since they have learnt this topic during their studies in the Junior High Schools. On the other hands, during the writer’s PPL and her experience as a private teacher, the writer observes that some of the SMA students are still hard to master the adverbial clause. So, in this thesis the writer will present the description of the adverbial clause along with the method of teaching is. The writer in this thesis presents the following points. First, the grammatical description of the adverbial clause (chapter III). The second is the techniques of teaching the adverbial clause communicatively (chapter IV). These chapters are preceded by the introductory chapter (chapter I) and by review of related literature (chapter II). The whole thesis ends with a conclusion chapter which deals with general points of the whole work (chapter V).
