Abstract

Critical thinking and writing skills are equally important skills for University students to acquire. Both skills are necessary and very useful for students in order to create a good piece of writing. Especially, assignments and academical papers in University level require a lot of writing and developing ideas. There are 5 different processes of critical thinking that University students should know which are; (1)Reasoning, (2)Analyzing, (3)Problem-solving, (4)Decision-making and (5)Evaluating. In this study, the researcher investigates the critical thinking processes used by the students of Writing D. The subject of this study is students from Writing D class, the highest level of Writing class in Widya Mandala Catholic University. The data were collected using questionnaire and interview for more detailed answers. The study found that students are involving critical thinking skills when composing essays and they found that the skills helped them to think broadly and create more substantial essays. Students also found that critical thinking skills bring various benefits in their real life beyond the Writing class.
