Abstract
Some schools and educational institutions are using TED-Talk as a learning tool for speaking and listening. Since 1984, world-renowned experts have delivered TED Talks, but not until 2007, have the lectures been uploaded to an online platform. In the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University, TED Talks have been used in the listening courses of Semester 3 students. Therefore, the researcher conducted research on Widya Mandala students' perceptions of the use of TED talk as an in teaching and learning media. Researchers examined student perceptions using a questionnaire and interview following the guidelines of Jen (2006) as the main instruments. There searcher took English Department students’ batch 2018 that have joined and passed Listening B subject as a students of this study. This study falls under descriptive qualitative study. The participants are forty five English Department Students of Widya Mandala Catholic University. A questionnair consisting of nine close-ended questions which was adapted from Jenn (2006) and an interview were used as instruments to collect the daa. The findings showed that students showed positive agreement and belif regarding the role of TED Talk to improve their listening skills. They also believe that listening to TED Talk could help to enrich their vocabulary and expand their insight. Additionally, the aspects of listening skills that are greatly helped by TED Talk is that the students don’t only understand the meaning, but also the use of the vocabulary in a context.
