Abstract

Literature begins in creative possibilities of human language and in the desire of human beings to use their language creatively. Reading literature may give entertainment, relaxation and excitement besides knowledge or information. It also can broaden people’s mind and insight about how people face the reality to complete his dream, to conduct his feeling and emotions, and also to struggle for a happy life. One of the literary forms is drama. The writer was interested in studying drama because drama is the most popular form of literature; it can be read or performed on the stage; all forms of drama which contain the interaction of the characters represent a special situation in life in the form of dialogues, actions, and appearance; and drama contains human problems in daily life. It also carries social messages made by the playwright to make people aware of the issues situations and conditions. The writer chose George Bernard Shaw’s work "Mrs. Warren’s Profession" because the story is seriously concerned about a moral study of the economic bases of prostitution. In this study the writer analyzed the motivations of Mrs. Warren to be a lady of entertainment in George Bernard Shaw’s "Mrs. Warren’s Profession" using one of the elements of drama; character, and theory of motivation. The study under report attempted to answer the following research question: What are the motivation of Mrs. Warren to have a profession as a lady of entertainment?. Therefore, the related theory used to answer the research question is the theory of motivation. In conducting this study, the writer used qualitative method, particularly the intrinsic approach which concentrates on the elements that exist inside the literary work itself, such as theme, plot, character, and setting. However, the writer only used one element of intrinsic approach, which is character, as consideration because the motivations of Mrs. Warren to be a lady of entertainment were known by analyzing that element. The data were taken from G. B. Shaw’s play "Mrs. Warren’s Profession" whose dialogues, narration, actions, and statements are assumed to represent the motivation of Mrs. Warren to be a lady of entertainment. The result of her analysis concludes that basically there are three main motivation for Mrs. Warren to have a profession as a lady of entertainment. The first one is to achieve a high standard of living, plenty of wealth and money. The second one is to raise to the higher social status so she becomes a socially respected and accepted lady, and the third one is to give her daughter, Vivie, a comfortable and contented life, and a first–rate education which can also make Vivie a respected lady.
