Abstract

Swearing are everywhere, not only adult but also young people use swear words everyday in their speech. This study conducted to find swear words used by the male students of the English Department of Widya Mandala, Surabaya and factors that contribute to utter them. The points discussed in this study are language variation and swear words and those two points included in sociolinguistics. People speak differently influenced by certain factors and it produces language variation. One of the variations in language is swear words. Swear words are words or expressions that reflect someone’s feeling and it may have positive or negative meaning. In collecting and transcribing the data, the writer chose to use a tape recorder, a cassette and a notebook. As a method the writer used a qualitative study and the non-participant observation technique in which the writer was not involved in the conversation and he observed and recorded the language spoken by the subjects only. It was found that the swear words used by the male students of the English Department of Widya Mandala, Surabaya are "Cuk" (bastard), "Jancukan" (Bastard), "Anjing/asu" (dog), "Jancuk" (Bastard) and the factors that contribute the participants to utter swear words are to show annoyance, solidarity, desperation and amazement. The writer suggests that future researcher will do a better study than what he had done with more sophisticated instruments and procedures in analyzing the data. He suggests that a further research might be done about swear words from different regions with different subjects and if it is possible in different language.
