Abstract

In proving the correlation of two skills, she chooses the achievement in listening skill and speaking skill of the English department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University in the academic year of 1994-1995. She would like to prove whether the students who get high scores in speaking test will get high scores as well in the listening test. The objective of the study is to find out whether there is a significant correlation between listening skill and speaking skill of the English Department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University in the academic year of 1994-1995. This study is a descriptive study that concerns with the relationship that exists. The sub-category of this descriptive study is a correlation study. The subjects of this study are 101 students from the academic year of 1994-1995. In analyzing the data, the writer calculates the correlation using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation. To know whether the hypothesis is accepted or not, the criteria given by Arcana (1996:57) are used. Then to know which hypothesis (Ho or Ha) is accepted, the critical value of r Product-Moment with significant level of 5% is applied. To know whether the correlation is significant or not, the writer also considers the value of correlation coefficient compared to the critical value of r Product-Moment. To interpret the coefficient formula, the criteria given by Herzberg (2983:171) is used. To know whether the relationships are linear or not the equation formula of the prediction line given by Arcana (1996:52) is applied. Then, the writer makes the scatter diagrams. To know whether the correlation is positive or negative, the criteria given by Herzberg (1983:171) is used. Finally, the writer draws the conclusion. The result of the coefficient correlation computation between listening skill and speaking skill has range from 0.4 to 0.5 and the linear regression is inclining, so we can say that listening skill and speaking skill of the English department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University in the Academic Year of 1994-1995 are moderately significant and positively correlated.
