Abstract

In English, grammar is one of the most important aspects as it has a function to organize words into order so that people could understand the idea. In the KTSP curriculum which is still used by the 9th grade students in Indonesia, grammar has to be taught because the students are expected to be able to master English language and use it communicatively. However, the English teachers have a tendency to teach grammar by using a traditional technique, in this case by using Deductive Application of Rule technique from Grammar Translation Method (GTM). This habit may cause students’ lack of interest in learning grammar which can affect their establishment in learning English. This quasi experimental pretest, posttest non equivalent control group study investigated how Teams-Games-Tournament technique from Cooperative Learning (CL) could help the students in achieving better results in learning grammar which is specified into present perfect tense and simple past tense. Conducted in one of the private junior high school in Surabaya, both of the technique (Deductive Application of Rule and Teams-games-Tournament) were given to different classes in order to know whether the null hypothesis which stated there is no significant difference between the grammar achievement students taught using TGT technique and those taught using deductive application of rule should be accepted or not. To sum up, by using the gain score means from both of the group, the result of data analysis using T-test: two samples assuming unequal variance showed that the null hypothesis should be rejected because the t-stat value > t-critical (3.115 > 1.997) and the p value < α (0.002 < 0.05). It indicates that TGT technique showed a better result than deductive application of rule.
