Abstract

It has been widely accepted that English is considered an International Language. Because of this, English in taught as the first foreign language in Junior and Senior High School. In order to be successful learners of English as a foreign language, we need the mastery of the four language skills, namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Among those skills listening is essential in communication since people primarily communicate by hearing someone speak to them, then they will give responses to what they have heard. Due to the fact, listening improvement is important in foreign language learning and teaching. So that the teacher should teach their students listening skill for the mastery of English as a foreign language. The writer uses library research and she believes that interesting technique of teaching will lead the students to improve their skills. In her study, the writer suggests materials for second semester at senior high school students. She suggested reading passage since reading passage seems to be a good material to improve the students listening skill because they contain messages expressed in logically and the can arouse the students, interest in learning the language. Through a reading passage, a teacher can help the students improve their listening. To be successful in the listening class, the teacher should concentrated on selecting material because not all the reading passage are suitable for SMA students. The next concern of the teacher is how to conduct the listening class. In this case, the writer uses three strategies of teaching listening. They are: prelistening, whilst-listening and post listening activities. Finally, since this study is a library research, the writer gets the information needed from books to support her study. Hopefully this study will be of some help to English teacher to teach listening.
