Abstract

One of very obvious sources of new words in Indonesian is English. There are several reasons why Indonesian speakers or writers in general and the writers of the 'Opini' column of Surya daily newspaper in particular might want to adopt English words. The simplest one is that the word is the name of something new. However, borrowing English words, in fact, can bring problems, as the borrowed words undergo change, such as spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and even parts of speech. The research, therefore, was intended to describe English loan words in the 'Opini' column of Surya daily newspaper. The research is mainly descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative in nature. The data were taken from 30 editions of the 'Opini' column of Surya newspaper. The parameters are constructed based on the theory of borrowing, to include patterns of borrowing, class-changes of the borrowed words, and reasons for borrowing. Moreover, the description of the change in the parts of speech is also included as the parameter of this study, since many English words that were adopted by the writers of the 'Opini' column underwent change in the parts of speech. The analysis shows that six patterns of borrowing were found in this study, namely total borrowing, partial borrowing, total modification of loan words, borrowing with modified meaning, newly created words based on loan words, and partial loan words. Among those patterns, partial borrowing was mostly used by the writers of the articles in the 'Opini' column, since 73,74% of the borrowed words belong to this pattern. Other finding of this study also shows that 98,14% of the borrowed words were spelled in accordance with the rules of EYD, while 1,85% were spelled incorrectly. Moreover, changes in the parts of speech of the borrowed words were also found, since 3,44% of the English words borrowed by the writers of the 'Opinion' column undergo change in the parts of speech. Finally, it is expected that the results of this study can contribute theoretically and practically to English Department students, EFL teachers, teachers of Indonesian, researchers in the field of borrowing, and writers of the 'Opini' column of Surya daily newspaper.
