Abstract

It goes without saying that studying literature will give some certain benefits to the students such as: learning human ways of life, human values, new vocabularies that can not be found in ordinary text books, and learning how to appreciate the work of art. The writer takes Drama as his object studied, because drama has a special quality in describing characters which other literature genres do not. Thus, he takes a character study on Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov. He deals with the protagonist, Ivanov, which becomes his focus and also four minor characters, Borkin, Lvov, Anna, and Sasha. Using Little's point in analyzing character and content analysis technique, this study finally finds out that: 1. Ivanov used to be a strong and wealthy man before he suffers a mental point which destroys his normal life. He lives in a world full of strangeness, fear, confusion, and description. His innormal life ruins his marriage and business. 2. Ivanov can not adjust himself with people arround him. He does not agree with Borkin’s idea of earning money, he has got a heat argument with Lvov, his wife doctor, about his treatment toward her, he does not love his wife, Anna, when she is sick and she needs him around, and he lets down Sasha's love and hope to him by committing suicide. 3. The protagonist is able to embody the theme convincingly as an individual who has a flaw which destroys hie whole life. In the middle of his misery, he tries to stand and fight back the fate which curses him, however, he fails and ends his life by committing suicide.
