Abstract

Studying literature can help students grow into the broader cultural, philosophic and religious world and to recognize human dreams and struggle so they have more mature sensibility for the condition of all living things. Beside, they can improve their vocabularies because there are a lot of words or expression in a literary work that are always found in daily life. The writer chooses Sherwood Anderson's works because his works are highly autobiographical and reflects his own experiences. He also deals with the psychology of characters. He always tells about small town people, tame and dull in aspect to uncover and reveal this hidden life. For this reason, the writer is interested in studying characters' failure in the three selected short stories of Sherwood Anderson that are "I'm a Fool". "The Egg", "Death in the Woods". This thesis is conducted to answer why the main characters in the three selected short stories always fail. In analysing these characters, the writer uses Practical Criticism especially Judicial Criticism proposed by M. H. Abrams as the approach of her study . Through her analysis of the three shorts stories, the writer finds that the main characters see failure as the end of all that they have done. They never think that failure should be become a good lesson for them to start the new failure so they will not repeat the same mistake in the next time.
