Abstract

One of the special things in the new curriculum. that is the 1994 Curriculum is about the existance of English as a subject that will be taught to the students of elementary school from the fourth year. Then, the objective of the English teaching is to provide and to give the students the skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing in simple patterns in the basis of the students' development steps and interests by the mastery of vocabulary for about 500 words. Unfortunately, there is no official English language material written based on the new curriculum. In addition, the teachers also feel that it is hard to carry out the new curriculum because they do not have time to read books of how to develop the material effectively. Last but not least, the students are not interested with the available materials which the teachers gave to them. Based on the reason above, this thesis is intended to find out how to develop the materials for teaching English to the fourth year of elementary school students. Furthermore, the writer follows the procedures as suggested by Dick and Carrey. This suggestion has encouraged the writer to conduct this study of which the aim is to find how to develop the English teaching material for the fourth year of elementary school students. The writer applies the material in Sekolah Dasar Kristen Gloria I in Surabaya. She also gets the scores of the formative test from the fourth year students there. To find out whether each item score is consistent with the total test scores, the writer computed the difficulty index and the discrimination index. The finding of this study leads the writer to the conclusion that the way how to develop the material, and the test written in this thesis can be applied to teach English to the fourth year of elementary school students in Indonesia.
