Abstract

The objective of language teaching is the students’ mastery in language skill, namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In order to achieve that objective vocabulary plays an important role. Therefore initial teaching-learning activities should be stressed on the students' vocabulary building. Since it is assumed that younger students have the capacity for learning and squiring a new language more easily the way of teaching vocabulary to Elementary school students should be paid much attention. Realizing the important role of vocabulary, the writer was interested in making a study on teaching vocabulary by means of pictures to Elementary school students. An experiment study was then conducted to test the effect of picture as a means of teaching English vocabulary to Elementary school students. The subject of this study were the fifth year students of YPPI Elementary school in Surabaya which were devided into two groups, group A was the experimental group and group B was the control one. The writer gave the same material to both groups, but she used pictures in teaching vocabulary for the experimental group only. From the analysis of the test result, the writer could prove that teaching vocabulary using picture could improve the students' vocabulary better than without picture.
