Abstract

Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea" is a short novel that is good for university students as its language and vocabulary are of university level. Besides, it contains values which are useful for the students' life. That is why the writer of this thesis decided to analyze the values - the human values of the theme contained in this novel. The research questions to be answered through this analysis is what kinds of Human Values are there in "The Old Man and The Sea? In line with the problem formulated, the writer wants to analyze and find out the human values in the old man Santiago's personality, namely psychological, social and metaphysical values contained in the novel "The Old Man and the Sea". The analysis of human values in this thesis was done using judicial criticism. It is because the analysis of human values of the critic's individual judgement on general standards of the literary excellence So, the appropriate method used by the writer is analysis since this study is trying to analyze human value in terms of personality in "This Old Man and the Sea". Based on the analysis, is was found that there are three kinds of human values: psychological, social and metaphysical values These human values are illustrated in the life of the main character of the novel, The old man, The Cuban fisherman. The psychological value is pictured in fisherman Santiago's struggle in his desire within himself to give up or to go on his ambition in getting big fish. The Social value is illustration in his struggle for overcoming the people or the community. Finally, the Metaphysical values is pictured in fisherman Santiago's communicate with God in 80 days ashore. In short, Santiago was a simple, old and symphatic fisherman who was able to behave properly in his success and failure. He succeded in following his philosophy of life, that is man is not made for defeat. He faces any difficulties in his life with his courage and endurance. The relationship with himself, community, and the universe reveals the three kinds of human values contain in "The Old Man and the Sea". Moreover, the novel represents human life in general - the struggle of fisherman Santiago can what human is. In brief, human inevitably faces those three kinds of human matters, himself, society, and the universe if he wants to catch the life.
