Abstract

Vocabulary is one of language components. Some experts consider it as the most important part in learning a language. It is really important because without mastering enough vocabulary one will not be able to understand the reading passage, express his ideas easily, or cannot communicate with others easily. To improve the students' vocabulary, the writer used language games in teaching English vocabulary. This technique helps a teacher to break the routine activity, avoid the boredom, and arise the students' motivation as well as attract them to participate in the classroom activities. Motivation plays an important role for the success of teaching learning process. That is why, the writer suggests language games as a means of teaching vocabulary because language games are really effective and useful. Many experts use language games in teaching-learning activities because games have been proved to have a great deal of value. They are used for teaching because they facilitate students in learning process, attract the students' participation and motivation, strengthen the lessons the students get. At the same time, language games provide enjoyable situations that break the tension. the students' boredom, and also provide competition and cooperation among the students. There are many kinds of language games available. They can help a teacher to vary the teaching of vocabulary and enrich students' vocabulary. In this study, the writer presents some language games that can be used for teaching vocabulary. At last, the investigation gives some suggestions to improve and develop the students' vocabulary. A teacher who wants to use language games should consider when to use, how to play and what language games are. To prove the effectiveness of the language games, the writer hopes a further research will be done to implement some suggested language games.
