Abstract

In this thesis, the writer chooses literature as the subject of her study. It is because literature can teach a lot about life that concerns with people and their culture. Here, the writer selects one of D.H. Lawrence's work entitled "The Trespasser". This novel is his second work and tells about the unfaithfulness of a good husband, Siegmund Mac Nair towards his family. In this case, the pattern of story is designed to find the cause and effect of the unfaithfulness of Siegmund. Therefore, in analyzing "'The Trespasser", first of all, the writer of the thesis wants to find out about the cause of the unfaithfulness on Siegmund. Later, she wants to find out about the effect of the unfaithfulness of Siegmund towards himself, Helena, and his family. She would like to discuss about findiug the cause and effect of the unfaithfulness of Siegmun because she wants to disclosure why a good husband like Siegmund would ever do such a foolish thing by committing suicide. In doing the analysis, the writer deals with literary and content analysis. Since then, she concerns with the elements existing inside the literary work like plot and character, and finds 'the meaning of each point and its contribution to answer her statements of the problem. Besides, she uses some references which are related to the discussion on The Trespasser, and to contribute her ideas that can be subjective. Therefore, this study is a qualitative research. After analyzing The Trespasser, the writer finds that there are two kinds of causes of the unfaithfulness of Siegmund; they are the intern cause (lack of communication between husband and wife, the uncomfortable of the disorganize house, and the financial problem) and the extern course (the presence of Helena as the other woman). Besides, she also finds out that the greatest effect of the unfaithfullness of Siegmund is his committing suicide which brings the impact toward Helena and his family.
