Abstract

As stated by Reid (2000), a process essay is a type of essays which gives directions or describes a process how to do a certain thing to the reader. This study focuses on the organization of the process essay, the existence of thesis statement in the introductory paragraph and a main idea in each body paragraph, and the relation between those main ideas and the thesis statement. It is qualitative in nature. The writer analyzed 12 process essays written by the fifth semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya of the academic year of 2010/2011 and found that the students have already written the process essays in the proper generic structure. Besides, the writer also found that some students still faced difficulties in composing a good paragraph which contains a main idea. Basing on the findings above, the writer concludes that all of the students have already understood how to write a process essay in a good generic structure but some of them still have difficulties in developing a good paragraph. Thus, the writer wants to suggest the Writing III lecturers to give more exercises on how to write a good paragraph so that the students can understand it better.
