Abstract

A number of people think that reading literary work is useless and does not give them monetary rewards. It is true in some points that literature is not profitable financially, but reading literary work will surely expand our horizon for literature consists of many aspects in human life such as human values, conflicts, culture, moral and social life. However, it is not easy to understand literary works for it involves not only the ability to interpret but it also requires imagination, intelligence and sensitivity. In the light of the above condition, the writer is interested in conducting an analysis on one of Charlotte Bronte's novel. This study is intended to find the theme of the novel through characters, plot and setting. The data of this study were taken from Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre. The data were analyzed based on the writer's subjective point of view and by referring to some theories in literature. After analyzing the novel through characters, plot and setting, the writer compiled each evidences that can be used to support the analysis. The data analysis brought forward the finding of the theme of the novel. The theme of this novel is self respect and the struggle for love and acceptance. This novel is a self-fulfillment or bildungsroman novel, a novel which concentrates upon characters' development from early youth to some sort of maturity. It refers to the failure or success of the character and it also tells us how the character finds his position in life. Finally, it is clear from the explanation above that characters, plot and setting play important roles in finding the theme of a novel. The writer hopes that her analysis on Charlotte Bronte's novel can be fruitful for other fellow students who are interested in doing a study on literary works.
