Abstract
English has become the international language in the world, so hat everyone tries to master it. However, deaf learners find it difficult to learn English vocabularies because they do not have many Indonesian vocabularies. Then, since they always depend on their sights, the subjects are usually taught using the Grammar Translation Method and Total Communication Method. Unfortunately, in teaching vocabulary, this technique cannot be used optimally because the pronunciation of the vocabulary is different from where is written. Therefore, the writer wondered, "How can the suggested technique for using pictures be applied to the teaching of vocabulary to the first year junior high school deaf students?" In answering the research question, the writer suggested two relevant methods: the Grammar Translation Method and the Total Communication Method in which both of those methods used pictures as the media of teaching. The writer suggested to use pictures in order to help the students make a clear concept in achieving the material taught. In the application of the technique based on the Grammar Translation Method and the Total Communication Method, the writer translates the vocabulary into Indonesian sign language (SIBI). She expects that by translating the vocabulary into Indonesian sign language the students can get the information presented. Based on her observation done at SLB Bhakti Asih, the technique used by the English teacher works ineffectively. Therefore, the writer suggests the English teacher to use the Grammar Translation Method and the Total Communication Method together with pictures as the media of teaching in order to help the students comprehend vocabulary taught to them.
