Abstract

In this thesis, the writer chooses literature as the subject of her study. It is because literature can teach people a lot about life that concerns with people and their culture. Here, the writer selects one of D.H. Lawrence's works entitled Lady Chatterley's Lover. This novel is his last novel and tells us about the unfaithfulness of a wife, Constance Reid, toward her husband, Clifford Chatterley. The writer discussed about causes and effects of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid because she wants to find out why a good and noble wife like Constance Reid has an affair with a low class man, Oliver Mellors. In this case, the objective of the study is composed to find the causes and effects of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid. Therefore, in analyzing Lady Chatterley's Lover, first of all, the writer of the thesis analyzed about the causes of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid. Later, she analyzed the effects of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid toward herself, her husband, and her lover. In doing the analysis, the writer deals with literary and content analysis. Since then, she concerns with the elements existing inside the literary work like plot and character, and finds the meaning of each point and its contribution to answer her statement of the problem. Besides, she uses some references, which are related to the discussion on Lady Chatterley's Lover, and to contribute her ideas that can be subjective. Therefore, this study is a qualitative research. After analyzing Lady Chatterley's Lover, the writer found out that there are two causes of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid, they are internal cause (lack of affection and tenderness, less feeling of companionship of a husband, and being out of touch of the sensuality of a man) and the external cause (the presence of Oliver Mellors as the lover). Besides, she also finds out that the greatest effects of the unfaithfulness of Constance Reid is for Constance Reid herself, that is she is reborn as a real woman who has a lot of care, attention and love, and a child. The other persons that also get the effects of unfaitllfulness of Constance Reid are her husband and her lover. Her husband is very much regretted and disappointed, and her lover finally finds the woman of his dream and regains his happy days with Constance Reid.
