Abstract

Language and culture are all closely associated, and they cannot be separated. Learning a language is not apart from learning the culture of the language users, since language is a part of a culture. So is the case in learning English, a foreign language taught at our school. Since the language reflects the culture of English speakers, students should be given insight into the habits, customs, and values which are similiar too different from their own. This will make students know and appreciate other cultures and enable them to evaluate their own culture. In addition, this is to help them avoid making non-language mistakes, and to assist them with a knowledge to understand the speakers of the language native. However, the fact is that in English teaching, the teaching of the culture is often neglected. The teachers often do not pay much attention on the culture that should be taught along with the language. They do not realize the cultural aspects explicitly and implicitly stated in the materials they are teaching. In order to teach English, that is the language as well as the culture, they should know and understand the cultural well and be able to find out the cultural aspects stated in the materials they use, so that they can teach English a long with its culture though they do not emphasize on teaching the culture. For this reason, the teachers need to make analyses of the cultures of the target and the students' native language. Based on the fact above, the writer tried to analyze an English material, namely, Lado English Series. Her study aims to interpret and explain the cultural aspects of American people, found in Lado English Series. It also aims to mention the differences and the similarities between Indonesian and American cultures found in those books. In carrying out this study, the writer conducted a library research, and she needed one year to do there search. She emphasized on analyzing the cultural aspects found in Lado English Series . From this study, the writer can conclude that there are six cultural aspects that should be considered when teaching Lado English Series, namely, patterns of politeness, family values, time and space patterns, leisure time activities, food and drink, and the geography of the United States. The American patterns of politeness reflect their ways of thinking and attitude towards each other in life. Their food and drink, their leisure time activities, their family values and the geography of their country also de scribe their characters, their taste, their common activities and their situation. It can also be concluded that each culture is good for its own society. Sometimes what is considered wrong or strange in American society is acceptable in Indonesian society, and what is considered right in the American society is uncommon or unacceptable in Indonesian society. It is, therefore, very important to learn the American culture and to know more about our own culture since we are learning their language and teaching it to Indonesian students.
