Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the students’ perception toward the English subject, which covers their opinions about the materials, the teaching and learning activities and the motivation. The subjects of this research were the eighth graders in two schools in Surabaya and there were 56 subjects in total. For analyzing the data, the writer analysed the results from the questionnaires and calculated the percentage of each answer. After that, the writer made discussions based on the percentages and findings. The result findings indicate that the students’ perception toward the materials in school was positive. The respondents said that the materials were easy and interesting. For the teaching learning materials, the respondents gave positive response about the media that are always and often used by the teachers. The respondents said that some media that are always and often used by the teacher in the class are interesting. For the motivations, the respondents gave negative responses of it. Hence, the overall finding of the respondents’ opinions about their motivation in learning English shows that most of the respondents have extrinsic motivation. The respondents gave positive responses about the materials and the teaching and learning activities but the respondents gave negative responses of the motivation. For the motivation, teachers may give the students some motivations about the importance of learning English for their future so they can enhance their intrinsic motivations.
