Abstract
Novel is one of the literary works that describes human life. It concerns with almost every aspect of life. In this study, the writer takes Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield as the subject of her research. The study is an attempt to find out the influence of social conflict faced by the David Copperfield towards his personality in Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield. The primary research question is: What is the influence of David Copperfield’s social conflict toward his personality in Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield? The primary research question can be achieved through the following questions : (1) What social conflict is experienced by David Copperfield? (2) How is the personality of David Copperfield after experiencing social conflict? This thesis is a qualitative study in the form of descriptive analysis. The analysis theory is based on objective approach. The writer finds out that the main social conflict faced by the main character is between David Copperfield and Uriah Heep. The personality of David Copperfield after experiencing social conflict remained the same. By answering the two guiding questions, the writer is able to answer the primary question about the influence of David’s social conflict towards his personality. The social conflict which David experienced between him and Uriah did not affect his personality. The writer hopes and suggests it is more likely for other researches to broaden the scope of study regarding this Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield.
