Abstract

English language is now learned by many learners throughout the world but not all of the learners are aware of the importance of vocabulary and reading comprehension. The learners are not interested to learn English through reading because the reading text was too long and they did not know the meaning of the words. As a result, learners do not have enough vocabulary knowledge to understand the text. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is a high correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension achievement of the ninth graders. The subjects of this study are 71 ninth graders. The instrument of this study is the vocabulary and reading comprehension test to measure the learners’ achievement of reading comprehension and vocabulary. The result of this study shows that there was a weak correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension achievement of the ninth graders. The correlation coefficient index was 0,2337. This might be caused by the fact that the research instrument (the test) was of low reliability. Although the correlation coefficient was weak, it can still be recommended that the English teacher should teach vocabulary more often in order to develop learners’ vocabulary knowledge to help them understand better English texts.
