Abstract

In Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign language besides the native language. Also, English can be used as an international language to communicate with another person. However, mastering English is not easy for Indonesian because they should realize that there are four skills should learn and practice. The four language skills are listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Of the four language skills, reading is emphasized. Sometimes learners have a lot of difficulties when reading printed materials. It is due to the lack of vocabulary mastery which is below average. Moreover, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and reading comprehension achievement of Grade VII students from one of the Private Junior High School in Surabaya In this study, the researcher used a correlational – quantitative design study. However, the researcher did not do any treatments. For this study, the researcher gave a try out test to pilot group before giving test to the subject. After giving the test to the subject, the researcher calculated the mean of each test scores before calculating the correlation between the means of the tests using Pearson Product Moment formula. Based on the analysis, it is known that the correlation between vocabulary achievement and reading comprehension achievement is 0,91. That means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. As a result, it can be concluded that there is a positive, strong correlation between vocabulary achievement and reading comprehension achievement. The result showed that an increasing ability in reading comprehension achievement is followed by an increasing ability in vocabulary achievement.
