Abstract

Unloyalty refers to the quality of being disloyal. Unloyalty comes from the feeling of a person who can not seem to enjoy what he/she has deserved. This act can come out from many factors. Factor is a circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result. Factor here can refer to many things. It can be concluded that factor is an important role in doing something. Many people do not consider the factors and the aftereffects of being unloyal. In some cases, even people do not realize that they are experiencing the unloyalty itself. Therefore, the writer wanted to discover many factors and aftereffects of unloyalty shown in a novel of Yasunari Kawabata, entitled Beauty and Sadness. The writer used literary analysis through Objective theory to find out the unloyalty done by Oki Toshio, the male main character of the story. Through the intrinsic elements (plot, theme, point of view and character), the writer found that the factors leading to the unloyalty were the beauty of other girls or women, the annoying personalities of his own wife, and many others. As a result of the unloyalty, the character had to face the loss of his child from his affair, the revenge of his affair’s relatives, and the loss of his son. By reading this thesis, the students studying English literature through a novel could learn the analysis process by looking at the plot, theme, the point of view, and the characters of the story in the novel. In sum, the writer presented the factors and the aftereffects of the whole acts of Oki Toshio’s unloyalty towards his own life.
