Abstract

A good classroom management is the key to have an effective classroom. Teacher can help by creating a supporting environment for the students so they are able to pay attention and understand the speaking lesson thoroughly. One of the solutions is seating up the seating arrangement. There are two seating arrangement which are being used in the speaking class of the English Department. They are the U shape and the row seating arrangements. Based on this view, the researcher has developed one research problem; what is the perception of English Department students on the seating arrangement in speaking class? This study is qualified into descriptive research. The researcher distributed a link as the questionnaire to be filled in. There were 20 items of open-ended questions. The respondents of this study were 34 students who had taken speaking A, B, and C subjects. The researcher also interviewed three students from the respondents by using close-ended questions. In the findings of this study, there were three aspects which are being analyzed. Those aspects were student’s perception on the seating arrangement in speaking class, student’s perception on the activities done in speaking class, and student’s perception on the seating arrangement in general. All of the aspects of the U shape seating arrangement had a good perception (72.9%). On the other hand, the majority for all of the aspects of the row seating arrangement had disagreement (52.6%). In addition, 77.9% of total responses prefer to have different variety of seating arrangement for the activities in the speaking class.
