Abstract

In learning English, there are four basic language skills and threebasic components. The components are vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Meanwhile, the skills are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Reading becomes one of the most important skills in learning English. At the English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, the students are trained to become a teacher. Therefore, the ability to read in English is essential. This study was in the form of a descriptive qualitative case study using the survey design. This study described the perception of English Department students on ED-R2 Assignment. It described the students’ difficulties, assignment frequency, reading material, opinion and suggestion on ED-R2 assignments. The participants for this research were 43 English Department students from academic year 2018/2019 in Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. The participants had taken and had passed the Intensive Course Program. The result of this study shows the perceptions of the English Department students from the academic year of 2018/2019 are affected by four factors: The difficulties of the assignments, frequency of the assignments, reading materials, and students’ opinion.The result of this study found that the English Department students had positive perception on the ED-R2 Assignments the English Department students had a good perception on every factors of ED-R2 assignments such as, The difficulties of the assignments, frequency of the assignments, reading materials, and students’ opinion. This study also shows the students’ negative perception on ED-R2 assignments.
