Abstract
Translation is important in order to transfer meaning or message from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). This study focused on idiomatic expressions in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho which were translated into Sang Alkemis by Tanti Lesmana. There were two objectives of this study, which are: (1) to identify what are the strategies used in translating the idioms from The Alchemist into Sang Alkemis and (2) to find out whether the idiomatic expressions in The Alchemist are translated accurately into Sang Alkemis. The data of this study was taken from both The Alchemist and Sang Alkemis. The writer analyzed the translation strategies based on Baker (2001:63). The writer used triangulation to avoid subjectiveness in measuring the level of accuracy. Along with the two validators, the writer measured the level of accuracy for each idiom found in the novel. From this study, the writer found out that the translator used four strategies of translation to the idiomatic expressions. The strategies are: (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form, (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, (3) translation by paraphrase and the last one is (4) translation by omission. By using these strategies, the translator successfully transferred the idioms from English into Indonesian accurately. This study found 78 idioms in the novel. 67 idioms were translated accurately while the other 11 idioms were not translated accurately or even omitted. Based on the four strategies of translation, 5 idioms (6.41%) were translated through the first strategy, 7 idioms (8.97%) the second strategy, 63 idioms (80.77%) the third strategy and 3 idioms (3.85%) the fourth strategy. In conclusion, overall the idioms in The Alchemist are translated accurately from English into Indonesian.
