Abstract

The study under report has tried to answer the writer’s following research questions: 1. What types of imagery are encountered in the Song of Songs? 2. What types of figures of speech are encountered in the Song of Songs? 3. What meanings do the types of imagery convey? 4. What meanings do the figures of speech convey? Using the content analysis method, the writer, as the instrument, came to the following results. There are five types of imagery speech encountered in the Song of Songs which are visual imagery, auditory imagery, gustatory imagery, olfactory imagery, and tactile imagery. Besides, there are four types of figures of speech encountered in the Song which are metaphor, simile, personification, and hyperbole. The result is also about the meaning of each type of imagery and figure of speech encountered in the Song as discussed in chapter four. The imageries and figures of speech are literally expressed in erotic and romantic words, phrases, sentences, and even verses. The authors of the Song of Songs tend to use such expressions to describe the beauty and the power of love between the lovers—a man and a woman. These expressions convey the hidden meaning that is spiritual value showing the beauty and the power of love between God and human. Since understanding literature as a part of language is very important, the writer had the following suggestions. Firstly, it is necessary for the teacher to give a kind of literary work such as certain plays or poems which consist of imageries and figures of speech in literary class. Secondly, it is useful to encourage the students to make an analysis of certain poems or short plays for the imageries and figures of speech so that they can learn a lot about poetic language.
