Red betel (Piper crocatum) has long been used by people as a medicine to cure various kinds of diseases. Generally people use a betel leaf in a simple manner, boiled first, then drink it. However, this method is less favored because of less practical, so that new innovations are needed to improve the comfort and ease of use, including the made in the form of lozenges. Betel leaves are used as cough medicine because it contains saponins which stimulate the release of bronchial secretion. In addition to the medical uses, betel leaves have been reported to have an antibacterial action, so making lozenges of red betel leaf extract is considered appropriate. The aims of this study are to determine the effect of type of binder and filler type in the formula lozenges of red betel leaf extract . The type of filler had been used are lactose-mannitol, lactose-sorbitol, and lactosesucrose; whereas the binder type are PVP K-30, cassava starch, and corn starch. Formula that uses starch as a binder will provide tablets with higher hardness, especially when combined with lactose-mannitol as a filler.
