Abstract

This study focuses on diphthongs produced by Mr. Jokowi at the APEC meeting 2018. It is aimed to find out the types of diphthongs produced incorrectly among the eight diphthongs based on the English standard. In accordance with this, a research problem is formulated. It is "what diphthongs are produced in president Jokowi's speech?" In order to answer the research problem, this study uses qualitative approach to analyze the data. The descriptive method is used here. The speech spoken by President Jokowi is used as the subject of this study. The writer used a video taken from YouTube entitled "President Jokowi at the APEC meeting 2018" as the data. Based on the data analysis, it is found that president Jokowi produced 6 types of diphthongs out of the 8 diphthongs based on the English standard. The results of this study are (1) there were 4 types of closing diphthongs produced, and (2) there were 2 types of centring diphthongs produced by President Jokowi in his speech.
