Abstract

Writing is very important for our lives, either for academic or for our career in the future. Writing is one of the four skills that should be mastered in learning English. Nowadays people use writing in many purposes, for example writing for educational purposes. To help the students improve their writing performance, in English Language Education Study Program, Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya, reflective journal is used in Writing A course. By using reflective journal, the students can get many benefits. The aim of this study is to find out the students' perception on the use of reflective journal in Writing A course. The participants of this study were 30 students who passed Writing A course in the academic year of 2019/2020. The data instrument of this study was questionnaire and interview. There were 14 questions in the questionnaire. Then, 9 participants were interviewed by the researcher to get a better understanding and to explore the research respondents’ opinion. The result of this study showed that the students gave a positive perception on the use of reflective journal in Writing A course. The students agreed that reflective journal gave them a motivation to write more because when they were asked to make reflective journal, they did it as a practice to write every week and it helped them to enhance their writing skills. In addition, the lecturer's feedback and comment in the students' reflective journal made the students felt motivated.
