Abstract
In communicating, people need to understand the meaning in an utterance so they will not misunderstand because an utterance not only contains a group of words, but also has the speaker’s hidden intention of wanting someone to do something. In pragmatics, this is called illocutionary acts. To understand illocutionary acts better and avoid misunderstandings in real life communication, this research aims to investigate the types of illocutionary act used by and addressed to the characters in Prison Break TV series. The writer chose the series as a subject for analysis due to the episodes’ linkage to one another. This study uses a qualitative approach by involving IFID in data analysis technique. To scrutinize the data, the writer uses Searle’s illocutionary acts taxonomy and analyzed the series’ clips and script. The writer found that there are 7 representatives/assertives, 21 directives, 16 commissives, and 5 expressives.Declarations are not used in the series.
