Abstract

Nowadays, computers are widely used in the educational sector, including in teaching writing. The effects of computer on writing are the changing how the writing class is conducted; it is conducted by practicing course on–line through e-mail and internet access. During the class, the students work on specific assignment and carry out particular task (e.g. brainstorming, writing outlines, creating drafts, and revising) by MS. Word. Since writing class using MS. Word is a new way for the English Department students of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (WMCUS), the writer decides to conduct a study aiming at seeing the attitude of the English Department students of WMCUS toward writing class using MS. Word that is to know whether their attitude is positive or negative. This study focuses on the attitude of the English Department students toward the learning of writing using MS. Word in the multimedia laboratory of the English Department at WMCUS. The attitude consists of three components: affective, behavioral and cognitive components. The students’ affective, behavior and cognitive will be known in this study. The study under report is a descriptive-quantitative study. The writer observed the subjects’ attitude by giving a questionnaire to them. The questionnaire has included the components of attitude and it also has 18 questions about the students’ attitude. After the writer gets the answers’ students of the questionnaire, he analyzes the data. After analyzing the data, the writer concludes that the subjects under study have positive attitude. The reason is mostly the students have positive cognitive (96.9%), affective (87.9%) and behavior (77%).For the future researcher, hopefully can propose some techniques, methods, and atmosphere which enable the students learning writing toward their attitude.
