Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important skills in English. In this era globalization, being able to speak and master the English language is expected. Schools in Indonesia make English as a compulsory subject. It is not only important for students’ academic, but also for their future careers and communication in workplace and the society. The English Department students experience difficulties to master English speaking. The students find some challenges in mastering Speaking such as lack of vocabulary and confidence. Therefore, debate technique can be used as an activity in Speaking A class to help improving the students’ Speaking skills, in hopes that the students will be interested in joining an English debate club. Debate can also help them develop their critical thinking. This study is aimed to find out the English Department Students’ Perception of Debate as a Speaking Activity of Speaking A Class. The participants are the students of 2017 batch of English Department of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya who have undergone Speaking A class. The data is taken with questionnaire and interview. The result is that the students perceive debate as a useful activity for improving Speaking and critical thinking skills as well as building their confidence. In contrast, there are small numbers of students who disagree that debate is a useful activity. In addition, the majority of the students are not interested in joining the English debate club because they are lack of Speaking and critical thinking skills as well as confidence. The rest of the students who are interested in joining the English debate club are those who have a good Speaking proficiency and critical thinking skills, along with confidence that they have.
